The Advancing Child Rights Strategic Litigation Project (ACRiSL) its eighth network event at 17:00-18:30 UK time (GMT) online on 28 January 2025. It was on the topic of Planning for impact: Climate justice strategic litigation and children’s rights.
Climate justice litigation is breaking new ground in courts around the world, but often this is only half the battle. Achieving meaningful impact beyond the courtroom poses an array of challenges to those involved in child rights strategic litigation.
The event consisted of two parts. The first part (45 mins) was a public panel discussion in which we heard from a range of experts working on climate justice litigation and children’s rights in order to explore how to ensure climate litigation is impactful, including in terms of effective implementation. We also discussed planning for different kinds of impact in climate litigation and what we can learn about this from rights-based litigation experience beyond the climate justice context. Speakers included:
Ida Edling - Spokesperson and Legal and Scientific Coordinator of Aurora
Tessa Khan - Executive Director of Uplift
Aoife Nolan – ACRiSL / Professor of International Human Rights Law and Director of the Human Rights Law Centre at the University of Nottingham
Lisa Vanhala - Professor of Political Science at University College London
Network members joined the second part of the event, a 45-min private closed session where the discussion continued, with the aim of sharing experience and discussing strategies in this regard.
